This project truly demonstrates the
true potential of the Rotary Movement in acting as
a catalyst which brought many organizations from different
countries all working together for a common goal under
the leadership and guidance of Rotary Club of Kandy |
|
The Rotary Club of Kandy (District 3200
- Sri Lanka) initiated one of its most successful
and land mark projects in care for the disabled by
acting as the catalyst to substantially upgrade the
Colombo Friend in need Society - Kandy Branch now
called "The Centre for Handicapped" |
|
It was the initial funding and support
provided by the Rotary Club of Enkoping in Sweden,
The Rotary Movement, TRF including human resources
which enabled this organization to obtain support
from a diverse number of other donors including NORAD,
USAID , the Government of Sri Lanka, The Sri Lankan
President 's Fund, Motivation of U.K. and a number
of individual and corporate donors to establish one
of the most successful rehabilitation centres for
physically handicapped persons in the country. The
centre was declared open on the 26th of September
1992 by the then Prime Minister the late Hon. D B
Wijetunge. |
|
In the year 2001 the Kandy Branch
withdrew from the Colombo Friend in Need Society and
established its own identify as the Centre for Handicapped.
This centre now operates independently and is registered
and approved by the Government of Sri Lanka under
Registration No.MSS/7/8/NSPD/R/123 - Section 20- under
the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
- Act No. 28 of 1996. |

Founding project Chairpersons were Late
PP.PHF T.R.R.Rajan & Rtn. PHF Shamil Peiris
Currently under the chairman ship of
our Vice President Shamil Peris the project has been
further expanded and nearly 4,500 amputees from various
parts of the country and from different walks of life
have benefited from CFH's limb programme. There has
been a gradual increase in quality as well as quantity
in many aspects like fabrication of limb, technology
used, organizational management, income generation
etc. |
 |
From the traditional Aluminum Jaipur
type limb the Centre graduated to HDPE exoskeleton
and composite endoskeletal limbs. Technicians have
been sent to India for a five-month training programme
to learn the fabrication of HDPE Exoskeleton limbs.
A team of expatriate Prosthetic & Orthotic professionals
from India assist in the fabrication of Endoskeleton
limbs. |
|
The whole concept of fabricating the
HDPE exoskeleton limbs has been changed and a professional
flavour added to it for the benefit of the user. The
stores have been completely revamped and an appropriate
system adapted for issuing of materials. The building
has been renovated to include a physiotherapy unit.
Patients who come from far off places are provided
with transit facilities along with food, all given
free of charge. Transport facilities are provided
to patients who find it difficult to reach the center |
