In keeping with Rotary International’s quest to provide clean drinking water and sanitation facilities to all, the Rotary Club of Kandy has used matching grants to undertake over 50 small projects in and around the Central Province. Schools, hospitals and poor villages are the main beneficiaries of these efforts with various members of the Club chairing individual projects. Three projects were completed in the October-December period and were handed over to the people concerned.

Sri Sumanajothi Viharaya, Wattegama
Two toilets, a water tank and related pipe lines were provided to the devotees of Sri Sumanajothi Viharaya, Meegammana West, Wattegama in the Kandy District at a project cost of Rs. 214,000/- on 20th December, 2009. The project was enabled through Rotary Foundation Matching Grant No. 70687, sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Huntingdon, Stamford, Holbeach, Kimbolton and District 1070 in the United Kingdom with further funding and implementation by the Rotary Club of Kandy. The project will benefit a large number of devotees who come regularly for worship at the temple and children who come in large numbers for religious classes. This project was one of ten similar projects to provide water and improved sanitation at a total project budget of Rs. 2.5 million.
Dungollala village - Hasalaka
A large capacity cement water tank of 25,000 liters and related pipe lines were provided to the people of Dungolla village at Hasalaka in Kandy at a project cost of Rs. 672,000/- on 12th December, 2009. This project was enabled through Rotary Foundation Matching Grant No. 70558, sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Simi Sunrise, Simi Valley, Westlake Village Sunrise and District 5240 in California – U.S.A., Soresina and District 2050 in Italy and Rotherham Sitwell and District 1270 in the United Kingdom with further funding and implementation by the Rotary Club of Kandy. The project will benefit a large number of under privileged persons living in the area who had previously struggled to meet their daily water needs and now have a reliable water supply system. This project was one out of 16 similar projects providing water and improved sanitation at a total project budget of Rs. 4.85 million.

Angammana village – Gampola
In the context of another of the 16 projects financed through Rotary Foundation Matching Grant No. 70558 mentioned above, a large capacity water tank, filtration unit, dam for a water collecting point, valves and related pipe lines were provided to the people of Angammana village at Gampola in Kandy at a project cost of Rs. 1,200,000/- on 15th February, 2010. The project will benefit a large number of poor under-privileged persons living in the area by providing them with a water supply system.

Continuing our flagship project which provides clean drinking water and sanitation facilities to poor villages, schools, hospitals and places of worship, the Rotary Club of Kandy has used several matching grants to undertake over 50 small projects in and around the Central Province. Several of these projects came to fruition during this quarter, thanks to the stalwart efforts of the club members chairing each project and to VP Shamil who sourced the funds.

Large capacity water tanks, pipelines, pressure valves and accessories were provided to the Nephrology Unit of the Kandy General Hospital at a project cost of Rs. 456,000. An adequate supply of clean water is vital to the smooth functioning of the Dialysis Centre, which is part of this Unit and which serves the entire Central Province. The project was handed over on January by President Ayesha and Rtns. Shamil, Zain, Baskaran and Sabry.

On 18th February President Ayesha and Rtns. Shamil & Baskaran handed over the completed Hantanewatte water project which provided pipelines to a section of the line rooms to the estate.
On the same day Rtns. Shamil and Baskaran also handed over a second water project to villagers at Harispattuwa.
On 20th February President Ayesha, Rtns. Shamil, Hugh, Nanda, Rehal, Keerthi, Pearly and Mohan S. traveled to Uraniya to hand over a water project at Tissapura. The project, undertaken by Rtn Ajay, included the building of a tank and pump house, the renovation of a well, the laying of pipelines and the provision of a pump.
Rtn. Sandoon was responsible for five Water Projects in the Deltota/Galaha area that were handed over on the 25th of February by a team comprising President Ayesha and Rtns. Shamil, Sandoon, Nanda, Keerthi, Lareef and Niyaz. The projects provided water for the Deltota and Pallegama hospitals and for three schools.

On 8th February a bathing well was provided to the people of Gundumale, Wakarawatte village in Kandy at a project cost of Rs. 250,000/- President Ayesha presided over the ceremony supported by Rtns. Shamil and Mohan S.

Rtn. Shamil was responsible for the sanitation projects at Gurudeniya and Kapuliyadda which were handed over on 18th March. Rtn.Wigneswaran chaired another sanitation project at D. S. Senanayake Vidyalaya which was handed over on 23rd March and Rtn. Gamini Abeykoon chaired a similar project at Poojapitiya in Pallegama. This latter project was handed over on 24th March. The Illukwatte Maha Vidyalaya sanitation project which was handed over on 30th March was chaired by Rtn. Carl.
