The Installation of PHF Ayesha Imbuldeniya Wijeyeratne, the 69th President of the Rotary Club of Kandy took place at the Mahaveli Reach Hotel on 10 October 2009 under the patronage of the Chief Guest, District Governor 2009/2010 PHF Suri Rajan and in the presence of Rotarians and their spouses from 21 Rotary Clubs. More than 200 people participated in the event.
In her address to the gathering President Ayesha reflected inter alia on peace in Sri Lanka, noting that it was the responsibility of every citizen to take full advantage of the welcome end to the carnage that we had witnessed over the years and to support the creation of an era of peace and prosperity, a united country and a uniquely Sri Lankan identity. She also noted that “Rotary has always promoted this unique identity…..” and that “our own diversity of ethnicity is testimony to the mutual respect we have for one another” and to our commitment to service that was “beyond any other petty considerations”.
President Ayesha ended by sharing a thought that has long served as her own inspiration - “We have not inherited this earth from our forefathers. We have borrowed it from our children” and invited everyone to “work together for the betterment of humanity and prove that we all took to heart that Rotary was truly in our hands”.
